FOrt Sumter
Fort Sumter is located on an island in the harbor of Charleston, South Carolina. The fort's commander would not surrender the land so South Carolina authorities decided to starve the 100 troops into surrendering. Lincoln attempted to send in food but, on April 12th, the Confederate artillery opened fire on the fort. After 34 hours with the fort on fire, the Union troops surrendered. The Confederate attack marked the beginning of The Civil War. This is considered the first battle of the Civil War, even though there were no human fatalities. The only death at Fort Sumter was a horse. "Our Southern brethren have done grievously; they have rebelled and have attacked their father's house and their loyal brothers. They must be punished and brought back, but this necessity breaks my heart."- Major Robert Anderson
